Barcelona is reportedly planning to have horizontal stripes on their home kit next season. In their 115-year old history, it is for the first time that the Catalans plan to adopt a new design in place of their hugely accepted jersey.
Sales down because of similar designs
According to Catalan newspaer Diario Sport, an insider at the club has speculated that Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has given the approval of the design after having met their kit manufacturers Nike. The company had presented the new t-shirt at a secret ceremony at Camp Nou.
The new uniform will feature under the headline ‘Revolution in the new shirt’. There will be four horizontal stripes at the front, something which has never been seen on a Barcelona home kit. The back will incorporate the Catalonian flag, as it appeared in Blaugrana’s fourth kit this season. The shorts will also be changed to crimson from their long-established blue.
A report also stated: “It is an important development because throughout history [the stripes] had been vertical, a line diagonally from one colour or even, on occasion, a single horizontal strip but no time were four bars horizontally.
“The company that equips FC Barcelona needed an innovative design because sales are down when the design is very similar to the previous year.”
There have been many different kits launched by Barcelona over the years, but the home game shirts have always been the traditional red and blue or the vertical stripes since 1899.
