Reports: Basel teenage star Breel Embolo emerges as target for Manchester United
The 19-year-old scored 13 goals for the Swiss outfit last term.
The club football season is over and it is that time of the year where teams across Europe will see their players linked to other clubs from the same continent and also from outside the continent.
One of the major clubs in the transfer window is Manchester United and they have already completed their first piece of business by signing Eric Bailly. The defender arrived at Old Trafford from Villarreal and his moved is subjected to a work permit.
According to Swiss publication 20 Minutes, Basel teenage star Breel Embolo has emerged as a target for the Red Devils. The 19-year-old scored 13 goals for the Swiss outfit last term and has taken his tally to 29 goals in the last two seasons.
His form has seen him being piped as the next big thing in Switzerland, if not Europe. The display for Basel has seen him make it to the national side for the upcoming European championship in France.
Embolo is a target for many clubs
United's league rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are also interested in signing the forward. In addition to this, German clubs Borussia Monchengladbach and Bundesliga newcomers RB Leipzig also made an approach for him, while a bid from Wolfsburg for Embolo was rejected by Basel in the mid-season transfer window.
It was believed the young player was set to move to Germany and join RB Leipzig as both clubs were close to agreeing a deal. However, that deal could be on hold after it was believed that United have made aware of their interest.
Since then, RB Leipzig have moved down the pecking order in the race to sign the young forward. The 20-time English champions' new manager Jose Mourinho has set his sights on the Swiss international.
This means there will be no change in plans to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimovic move to Old Trafford, reports the Metro. The Swedish international striker left Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent and is heavily linked with a move to United.
It is believed the 34-year-old former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus striker will sign a one-year deal at United. Should he sign for the Premier League giants, Ibrahimovic will join Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney as the list of strikes at United.
However, the England international has been deployed in the midfield and has played in the No 10 role, which is his preferred position. Martial has also deployed on the wings, which leaves Mourinho with Rashford and Ibrahimovic (if he joins) as the only two options. Signing Embolo would be a very wise option, considering that he a potential to become a star in the future.
