Dortmund have earmarked Ozil as a replacement for Dembele

What's the story?

Nothing seems to be going right for the Gunners at the moment. If rumours surrounding Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departure from the club were not enough for the fans, it now seems that Mesut Ozil might also be on the move.

According to the Express, Borussia Dortmund are planning to make a surprise bid for Ozil as a replacement for Ousmane Dembele.

In case you didn't know...

Ozil grew up near Dortmund and spent three year playing for Schalke before joining Werder Bremen in 2008. He then joined the Gunners in 2013 from Real Madrid.

Just like a couple of Arsenal players, Ozil has entered into his final 12 months of the contract. The playmaker is yet to sign a new deal and commit his future to the North London side.

Wenger has so far not been able to convince the German international to sign over the dotted line.

The heart of the matter

Dortmund sold Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona just a couple of days back for an initial €105 million, making him the second most expensive player.

The German club are now looking to replace the 20-year old and have identified Ozil as an alternative.

Dortmund have sufficient funds to spend and according to reports, it is believed that they are willing to spend a large portion of the Dembele money to bring the 28-year old the Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund know that Wenger will not let Ozil go away easily and therefore the former League champions plans to force Arsenal to consider selling their star by offering big money.

Arsenal face losing the playmaker for free next season if he does not sign a new contract and the Gunners have a real decision to make ahead of Thursday's deadline.

Wenger, however, is confident that the German playmaker will remain at the club and sign a new contract. But Dortmund believe that they can lure the World Cup winner back to Germany.

Author's take

Arsenal need to sort out the mess as soon as possible. The fans are not all happy with the way the club is functioning and the 4-0 loss to Liverpool yesterday just doesn't help the cause.

Selling players without proper backup/replacements is not what the fans want and its high time Wenger makes a bold step and signs good players or stops them from leaving.
