Reports: Germany's Mesut Ozil to donate World Cup winnings to help children in Gaza

Mesut Ozil to donate his world cup winnings to help childern of Gaza

Showing his philanthropic side, reports suggest that Mesut Ozil has announced he will donate the £350,000 he earned as his World Cup winnings to the children of Gaza.

With violence increasing in the Middle East following a failed ceasefire, Ozil has committed himself to help the people of the occupied territory by giving away his £237,000 bonus he received after the final, in addition to the £118,000 he received after Germany won the semi-finals.

He was also reported to have been involved in an incident recently where he refused to shake hands with a FIFA official who was a known Israel sympathiser.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas group based out of Palestine has seen over 1,000 rocket strikes and 1,300 airstrikes on the Gaza strip.

Apart from him, the Algerian team donated their £5.25m prize money to the people of Gaza, after their exit from the World Cup.

Algerian striker Islam Slimani was quoted as saying that the entire team would donate the money to help the territory as “they need it more than us”.

It is still not very clear if Ozil has pledged the money to the children in Gaza or for the surgery of children in Brazil, as he indicated in his post on his Facebook page.
