Reports: Manchester United set to appoint Jose Mourinho as manager

Is Mourinho finally set to arrive in Manchester?

Louis Van Gaal’s season did not end in disappointment as the manager led Manchester United to FA Cup glory last night. But his joy might be short-lived if reports coming from several sources are true.

Fans have been disgruntled all season at Van Gaal’s lack of attacking play and it looks like the club are set to announce Jose Mourinho as their next manager, with the announcement expected to be very soon according to BBC Sport.

Mourinho has been linked with taking charge at the club ever since he got the sack at Chelsea. With United failing to finish in the top four they will have to remain content with playing in the Europa league next season.

The disappointment of not achieving their target might have also triggered the board into making the decision. The club have planned to announce Mourinho as the new coach early next week and will inform Van Gaal that his tenure will be cut short.

Van Gaal wants to stay

The news will be a little anti-climactic considering Van Gaal has just delivered United’s first ever trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club. But maybe finishing 5th and winning the FA cup is not something a club like United are used to.

When Van Gaal was asked about his future at the club after the game he expressed his desire to stay. “I show you the cup and I don't discuss it [my future] with my friends of the media, who already sacked me for six months. Which manager can do what I have done?” he said in his post-match press conference holding up the trophy.

“I hope to see you. I don't want to talk about leaving this club.” Van Gaal still has one year remaining on his contract but it can be debated whether the £250 million he has spent over the last couple of years have reaped their rewards.

Mourinho declines to comment

Jose Mourinho was also questioned by the media about his possibly imminent arrival but knowing the Portuguese he declined to comment on the situation. The reason for the uncertainty of his arrival was because the higher ups at the club were unsure about him but now it looks like they have made up their minds.

There are also reports saying Ryan Giggs will not stay at the club if Mourinho does take the reigns, something United fans will not want to see. The Special one has achieved success wherever he has gone and it makes sense for the club to appoint him, but whether he is the right fit for United or not remains to be seen.
