James Rodriguez is ready to move to Manchester

What’s the story?

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Real Madrid's James Rodriguez this summer, according to ESPN FC.The Colombian has reportedly set his sights on a move to Old Trafford as he wants regular playing time, something he couldn’t get at Real Madrid this season.

In his 12 appearances for his club, he has scored eight goals and assisted another six and this has attracted the attention of some major European clubs including Chelsea, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

In case you didn’t know…

Los Blancos signed Rodriguez from Monaco for €80 million after his sensational performance in the 2014 World Cup. The deal made him the third-most expensive player in Real Madrid's history.

The 25-year-old was a regular under Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez but couldn’t make it to Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI this season.

The heart of the matter

United officials have contacted Los Blancos who they have asked to keep them informed about the progress of the deal. Jose Mourinho and Rodriguez have the same agent, Jorge Mendes, who can help in getting the Colombian to Old Trafford next season.

While the Atletico Madrid star Antonio Griezmann is still United’s first choice, Mourinho is eager to sign Rodriguez to add some depth to his midfield.

The Old Trafford outfit have failed to live up to expectations this season in the Premier League despite splashing the cash and are looking at a summer overhaul to get them back in contention for the top spots next season.

The Red Devils are ready to splash around £200m in the next transfer window, something confirmed by Gary Neville when he told Sky Sports, "Manchester United have the largest chequebook in the world at the moment regarding fees.”

What’s next?

The move is likely to take place only if United qualify for the Champions League next year. This means that the Red Devils would need to win the Europa League if they wish to see the Colombian ply his trade at Old Trafford.

If the attacking midfielder moves to United next season, there will be quite a competition for spots. Manchester United already have Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata as attacking midfielders and if Rodriguez does indeed move, one of the players will be forced to the bench.

Author’s Take

The Red Devils already have enough attacking midfielders at the club and forcing one of them to the bench by signing James will do the club no good. Instead of signing another midfielder, United should focus on securing the services of an experienced striker who can bang in 30 goals for them, something they have lacked this season.
