What’s the story?

Manchester United have reportedly launched an astronomical bid of £150 million for Real Madrid star Gareth Bale. The Welshman is now evaluating his future post the offer, according to reports by Spanish outlet Diario Gol. The Welshman has been a long-term target for Manchester United, as Jose Mourinho is said to be desperate for a marquee signing in the summer.

In case you didn’t know..

Gareth Bale, despite signing a new contract recently has been, on multiple occasions, linked to a move away from Real Madrid. The 27-year-old has had an injury-plagued season in which he has just made 22 appearances, but has a decent return of 9 goals and 4 assists.

The Welshman, however, is firmly in the shadows of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, he is starting to get into his own now, with a run of games under his belt.

The heart of the matter

Manchester United have been interested in the former Tottenham man since his time in London but lost out to the Los Blancos when he eventually moved to the Spanish capital back in 2013. However, they have been reportedly monitoring his situation at Real Madrid for a while and the management at Old Trafford think that this is the last opportunity to prise away the Welshman in his prime.

However, whether Gareth Bale is interested in the offer remains to be seen.

What’s Next?

Jose Mourinho in an interview on Wednesday said, “It's speculation. I always try to be objective and pragmatic with clubs and to ask them what they can give me. To ask for Neymar is absurd”, ending all speculation of the Brazilian moving to Old Trafford.

It would be classic Jose if he uses that as a smokescreen for a cheeky offer for the Real Madrid man. Bale has repeatedly confirmed that he is happy at the Bernabeu, but being the main man at Manchester United is something not many players can turn down.

Author’s Take

Gareth Bale to Old Trafford is a transfer saga of sorts. A topsy-turvy one and this summer might be the last opportunity for the Welshman to move to England and Manchester United. A lot will, however, depend on his situation at Real Madrid and his role in the side.

With Cristiano Ronaldo finally showing signs of decline, will he be handed the mantle to be the main man? Only time will answer that question, but the offer from Manchester United is a brilliant bargaining chip to have.
