What’s the story?

Rio Ferdinand speaking after the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid explained what sets apart Cristiano Ronaldo from the rest of the players in world football at the moment.

Speaking of his time with the Portuguese at Manchester United, he told English outlet Mirror, “He was very young, he was very inexperienced, very immature in the way he played, a bit of a show pony at times”, he said.

“But he had the mentality, he had the desire, the work ethic. He always wanted to be a superstar but the difference is he worked beyond anyone to become a superstar, and that's what sets him apart”, the former Manchester United defender concluded.

In case you didn’t know..

Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo were part of a very successful team under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, who won three Premier League trophies and the Champions League during his time at Old Trafford.

It was evident that he was something special when he arrived at Old Trafford, but clearly, his work ethic and his application on day to day basis on his game helped the 4 time Ballon d’Or become the player he is now at Real Madrid.

The heart of the matter

Now, 32-years-old and still defying expectations at Real Madrid, the Portugal captain has scored 35 goals this season and has assisted a further 12 goals. He might have played just 44 games this season, but between him and Zinedine Zidane, they have managed his workload brilliantly.

The comparison between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is often the talk of the street, and players who have played with both normally go with how Lionel Messi is more of a god given talent, and Cristiano Ronaldo has harnessed his skills through hours and hours of practice. That is more of a tribute than a compliment.

What’s Next?

There is always a small doubt as to what happens in the summer with Cristiano Ronaldo, with persistent links to PSG or a move back to Manchester United. However, it looks like that he will be playing out his best days in the royal whites of Real Madrid.

And by the look of things, he has the hunger to win lots and lots.

Author’s Take

There is no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest of all time, if not THE greatest. Although prodigiously talented as a youngster, he had rough edges, which he combed with years and years of practice. He is an inspiration to one and all.
