Rumour: Rio Ferdinand faces summer exit from Manchester United

Real Sociedad de Futbol v Manchester United - UEFA Champions League

According to the Telegraph, Rio Ferdinand looks set to be the first high profile departure from Manchester United this summer as David Moyes looks to put his own signature on a side inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferdinand, who is on a one-year deal which runs out in June 2014, has not yet been given an extension and is believed to be weighing up his options. Ferdinand will look to wait until the end of the season before deciding whether to continue his playing career. The former England captain has accepted media work from BBC and BT Sport but could yet end up playing for another club.

With Moyes increasingly looking to add young players to the squad, Ferdinand’s chances of getting a contract extension look bleak. The centre-back who played a string of games at the beginning of the League campaign has in recent times been relegated to a place on the bench in favour of Johnny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

United’s policy of offering only one-year contract extensions to older players and Moyes’ plans of building a young, energetic side could see Ferdinand headed to an exit from Old Trafford. Rumours suggest that there remains strong interest from clubs in the United States and Middle East
