Rio Ferdinand to get £2m from a testimonial

Chelsea v Manchester United - Premier League

Manchester United‘s Rio Ferdinand has been given the opportunity to earn £2 million from a testimonial this year.

Although he has reclaimed the position of first choice centre back, Ferdinand, who is currently 34, is yet to make a decision regarding his future at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson acquired the giant centre back for £30 million from Leeds in 2002.

The Manchester United boss believes that the former England skipper is still capable of playing football the highest level for a few more years. The defender has been getting many offers from clubs in China, America and the Middle East if he considers leaving the club and wants to continue playing. Regardless of the rumours surrounding his future with Manchester United, Ferdinand has admitted that he is in no hurry to come to a decision about this matter.

Despite no confirmation about his future, there have been discussions, which started as early as last summer, about a testimonial to be held at the end of the season. Even if Ferdinand decides to go ahead and leave the club, United have agreed to sanction the match.

Veterans like Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, who had retired in 2011, were granted testimonials after they left the club. The same privilege, although the opponent is yet to be decided, will be handed to Rio Ferdinand as well.
