In a startling revelation by Borussia Dortmund’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, he revealed that the reason he was seeking a transfer was because he was told he couldn’t be the best paid player at the club because of his nationality.

In an interview with EuroSport, Lewandowski said (translated): “Several times I met with the authorities of the club to discuss my new contract. The talks were not easy at first, it had an influence on me because I was not appreciated as much as I thought. I heard something like ‘a Pole can not earn much in Dortmund’.”

Lewandowski also revealed that he was ready to leave in the summer itself.

“During the summer, I was ready to leave Dortmund. The authorities told me that if the club got a good deal, I could go. It was all complicated after Mario Goetze’s departure [to Bayern Munich], but I wanted a transfer.”

“Most Borussia Dortmund fans would prefer me to stay. People appreciate that I give it everything when I play. But people have accepted my decision that I need a transfer. I want to go further and develop.”

When questioned on a possible transfer, he responded: “Transfer? I will not answer this question. I do not know if (I will go to) Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, I am currently a player at Borussia Dortmund. I think that Real and Bayern are currently the two best clubs in the world, but it’s hard for me to talk about the team being the player I am.”

“It’s hard, today, to say what will happen in January. I still have a few days off until the new year to think about what to do next. For now, I do not think about transfers, I am in Poland to spend free time here.”

The Bundesliga is currently on a winter break and Dortmund’s next match isn’t until January 25, 2014.
