After being sacked by Everton, Roberto Martinez has managed to land £10m as compensation for sacking him before his 5-year contract expired.

Martinez took over the Merseyside club from David Moyes in 2013, did wonders for the club with limited resources and won the hearts of the fans. After having a wonderful 1st season with the Toffees, he signed a new 5-year deal with the club.

Chairman Bill Kenwright was wary of losing his manager to Spurs and Martinez had also attracted interest for the England job. To drive off interest from other clubs, Martinez signed a 5-year deal whereby other clubs would have to pay the remainder of his contract as compensation to Everton.

This also meant that if Martinez was sacked before his deal ran out – that is – before 2019, the club would also have to pay him the full amount.

Kenwright had lavishly praised Martinez in 2014, “In many commentators’ eyes, Robert Martinez is the best young manager in Europe. We agree. He took on an unfamiliar challenge for most of the managers, to take something really good and make it better. He has succeeded.”

“In his debut season, he broke our Premier League records points haul, got us back into Europe and developed some of the most exciting young footballers in the game. He conducts himself off the pitch in the same way. He undertakes his business with great style, confidence, positivity and class.”

Having signed a 5-year deal in the summer of 2014, Martinez still had 3 years of his contract left. Martinez and Everton took this case to a hearing in London, where the former asked for around £12m.

The lawyers of the club were looking for a way to reduce the amount but couldn’t as a clause in the Spaniard’s contract meant that he had to be paid his full amount due – £12m. An agreement was finally reached where the sum was between £10-11m, as reported by Daily Mail. The amount was decided after the club promised to pay £10m in one instalment.

The former Wigan Athletic boss lost the backing of Everton supporters last season after winning just 10 games in the season and just 4 games in 2016, the club parted ways with Spanish manager.

Although the Spaniard did manage to take the club to semi-finals of the FA Cup and the league cup, losing both games, the main concern was the form in the Premier League. From finishing 5th in his 1st season, the club under his management finished 11th in the last season – their worst league position in 9 years.

Roberto Martinez was, surprisingly, appointed the manager of the Belgium national team after the Belgians’ disappointing EURO 2016 campaign.

Martinez also appointed Arsenal legend Thierry Henry to his backroom staff.
