Roberto Martinez has done an incredible job with Everton this season

Everton have had an excellent season under new manager Roberto Martinez and are pushing for a top four place in the Premier League. The Toffees have been unbeaten in all but one of their League fixtures this term, with the only loss coming in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. Martinez, who previously managed Wigan, has brought a Spanish style of play to the team, which has made Everton one of the best counter-attacking sides in the Premier League.

Former manager David Moyes was a shrewd manager and brought some truly gifted players to Everton in the form of Leighton Baines and Tim Howard and Martinez can thank the Scot for leaving him with such a brilliant team. Martinez himself made some smart moves by bringing Romelu Lukaku of Chelsea and Gerard Deulofeu of Barcelona on loan to Merseyside. The young forwards have made an immense impact at Goodison Park so far with Lukaku scoring 8 goals in 11 appearances and Deulofeu putting in some promising displays. Deulofeu has adapted to Martinez’s style of play and scored a stunning goal in the 84th minute against Arsenal is yesterday’s match, earning his temporary side a well deserved draw.

The loan move of Gareth Barry was also a stroke of brilliance by Roberto Martinez. The England international made an immediate impact in the opening game against Chelsea, constantly frustrating the Blues forwards, and eventually helped Everton to a 1-0 win. The 32-year-old produced another phenomenal display against Manchester United and managed to shut out the Red Devils midfield. Barry will most likely permanently move to the Liverpool based team next season which is a good thing for Martinez.

However, Martinez’s job is not over just yet. The strike force is only temporary and Lukaku and Deulofeu will head back to their parent clubs next season. Martinez must buy a striker who will stay with the club for the long term. Deulofeu has a £29 million release clause on his contract, and even though he would be worth every penny it remains to be seen if Martinez will splash so much money on the 19-year-old.

Everton are currently making waves in England and there will be no shortage of players wanting to ply their trade with the Toffees. Martinez should invest in a top class striker if he wants to lead the club to trophies in the future. Ross Barkley is a gem for Everton and Martinez must do all he can to keep the talented youngster at the club.

Martinez has to still prove that he is just as shrewd as his predecessor when it comes to buying players and the two upcoming transfer windows will shed some light on that subject. All that aside, it can be safely said that Roberto Martinez looks like the right man for the Everton job.
