Manchester United striker Robin van Persie cast a dejected figure in the wake of their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Olympiakos on Tuesday, telling reporters that the club are currently “lousy.”

The former Arsenal striker didn’t hold back when assessing the club’s form, but was adamant that manager David Moyes is the right man to turn the club around.

“We are lousy – in a lousy position in the league, out of the cups and this looks a difficult one also,” said Van Persie of the Olympiakos loss.

“We are very disappointed. It’s a tough season.”

However, having given his honest assessment of the side’s form, Van Persie backed Moyes to turn the club around, telling reporters that it is up to the club’s players to perform for him.

“He is new and needs time. He’s working hard and so are we,” continued Van Persie.

“It’s easy to point at the manager but that’s not who I am. We need to do it on the pitch.”

The Dutch striker also exhibited some gallows humour over the club’s current state. Responding to the suggestion that United’s performance in Greece was unrecognisable, Van Persie is reported to have said:

“You didn’t recognise us? Maybe it’s because you didn’t see us play in quite a while.”

Van Persie has a shot accuracy of just 18% in this season’s Champions League.
