Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro lifted their first ever Copa Libertadores trophy when they defeated Paraguay’s Olimpia in a penalty shootout on Wednesday.

Coming into the 2nd leg, Atletico were trailing 2-0 after the first leg defeat in Asunción. Jo Silva managed to score in the 46th minute, followed by another goal by defender Leonardo Silva in the 87th minute.

The match went into extra time and Olimpia were one man down after defender Julio Cesar Manzur was sent off with a second yellow card in the 85th minute.

No more goals were scored in extra time, and the match went to a penalty shootout.

Atletico Mineiro’s Victor managed to save the first penalty, while Matias Gimenez hit the bar in the final penalty, resulting in Atletico Mineiro’s first Copa Libertadores win.

With this victory, Ronaldinho became the 4th player to win the Copa Libertdores, UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup.

Atletico Mineiro will now play in the Club World Cup which will be played in December.
