Roy Hodgson has taken umbrage to Gary Lineker’s criticism regarding the England squad’s formation during the match against the Republic of Ireland that ended in a 1-1 draw.

The ex England striker openly criticized the manager’s 4-4-2 formation on Wednesday saying that he took the team “back to the dark ages”.

He also said that if he continues with the same tactics, then there was high chance that Brazil would thrash them in the upcoming friendly match set to take place in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

When made aware of the comments by Lineker, Hodgson retaliated by saying “Oh well, that’s a pity. I thought we played well.” He also said that his formation was inspired by Borussia Dortmund’s play during the Champions League final.

The England squad, who are two points behind Montenegro, are second in their World Cup 2014 qualifying group with four games to go.

Responding to the criticism of England’s display, he added: “What is the dark ages? Basically I suppose we were playing the two front players and asking at least one of those front players, when we lose the ball, to make certain he drops down and helps out in midfield.”

When asked about his side’s chances of qualifying for next summer’s tournament in Brazil, Hodgson said: “We will wait and see. But you’re asking me the question, do I believe, from what we saw against Ireland, that we are on the right track – and the answer is ‘yes’.
