Barcelona have reportedly decided to sell Frenkie de Jong in the 2025 summer transfer window, as they are not satisfied with the midfielder's level. As per SPORT (via Barca Universal), the club have offered the midfielder a new contract. However, he has not responded to it, and they will not keep him if he rejects it.
De Jong's current contract will expire in 2026, with Barca paying him a heavy €35 million per annum, inclusive of deferred payments due to their financial struggles. He has essentially become a rather expensive player at the club. Their wage bill would breathe easier if he agreed to a new contract that saw him earn less.
However, with De Jong unresponsive to their offer, Barcelona are prepared to let him go in the summer of 2025. They would like to sell him, rather than let him run down his contract until 2026, as this would save them a fair bit of money. The report also revealed that if they cannot sell him, Barca would be open to him leaving for free in 2025. The focus of the club is on the wage bill.
Barcelona will find it much easier to fall in line with financial fair play rules if they can get Frenkie de Jong off their wage bill. He has been injury-prone, missing out on 32 matches for club and country this year alone.
Hansi Flick has provided an update on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has provided an update on midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has struggled with returning to full fitness for much of this year. He was on the sidelines from April till October, eventually making nine appearances for the club.
However, De Jong has yet to return to full form, often playing as a substitute. Hansi Flick spoke about the midfielder after Barcelona beat Brest 3-0 at the Olimpic Lluis Companys Stadium in the Champions League on November 26. He said (via Barca Blaugranes):
“De Jong is working very hard to get back to his best level. He’s not 100%, but we’re working on it and he will. I am happy that the other midfielders are playing well. We will try to get De Jong back to the best physical level, we are all working on it.”
The midfielder will hope he can return to fitness fully and continue playing for Barca at a more consistent level.
