According to Sky Sports' Dharmesh Sheth, Manchester United have identified Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a potential transfer target in the summer window. The 27-year-old is currently in the final year of his Everton contract.
The report adds that the Calvert-Lewin is not a priority target and the Red Devils would contemplate a move only in case of a sale. It is not an area United are looking to bolster actively as they already have Rasmus Hojlund and have signed Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.
Calvert-Lewin is a striker who likes to play as a target man and has so far scored 68 goals and has provided 18 assists in 247 appearances for the Merseysiders. In 2023-24, he scored eight goals and provided three assists in 38 appearances.
He is not the most prolific goalscorer but can hold up opposition defenders with his presence. Whether United need such a striker is questionable as Rasmus Hojlund can often do the dirty physical work in the attack.
Calvert-Lewin, though, could be available in a cut-price deal as he is in the final year of his Everton contract. That said, apart from Hojlund and Zirkzee, United also have Marcus Rashford. Hence, rather than crowding the attack, signing a defensive midfielder would perhaps suit the Red Devils' interest better.
Rio Ferdinand speaks on Manchester United's move for Matthijs de Ligt
Manchester United are set to complete a blockbuster transfer for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutchman, once touted as one of the best young defenders in the world, is headed for his medical.
Rio Ferdinand has shared his two cents on the move, claiming it'd be a big ask for De Ligt to succeed due to his injury track record. The United legend recently said on Rio Ferdinand Presents (via Metro):
"He's had a lot of injuries, hasn't started too many games over the last two or three years and Man United are spending £45- 50 million on him. Is he going to come into Man United and make a difference? I think it's a big ask for him and all eyes are going to be on him."
Since his Bayern move in 2022, De Ligt suffered seven different injuries. Manchester United already saw new-signing Leny Yoro get injured and get sidelined for three months.
De Ligt mustn't suffer the same fate, especially early in the season. When fit, De Ligt offers pure quality on the pitch.
