Rumour: Manchester United’s Adnan Januzaj to snub England for home nation?

Adan Januzaj

Adnan Januzaj has been invited to turn out for Kosovo in their first international match as an independent state – but that won’t prevent him from being available for any other nation.

Januzaj has had his international future bandied about heavily in the media recently, as he is available for a multitude of countries due to being born in Belgium to Albanian and Kosovar parents, while his residency in England has caused the FA to investigate the potential of turning out for the Three Lions in the future.

Kosovo have made the first move by inviting him to play in their inaugural friendly match against Haiti in March, but that won’t determine his international commitments just yet.

FIFA are yet to ratify Kosovo as an independent footballing nature as they are yet to be invited in the United Nations following their split from Serbia, but they have been given permission to play games against any nation that recognises them as an independent state.

They hope to have Januzaj appear for them against Haiti, with general secretary of the Kosovo Football Federation, Eroll Salihu telling Goal: “We are in discussions with Adnan’s family and to have a player of his amazing talent play in our very first match would be hugely symbolic.

“We feels he owes it to his people to take some part in the match, even if it is just for 15 minutes.

“I stress this is a symbolic gesture. By playing in this match we are not thinking that he is making any commitment to us.

“It is a friendly and would not have any effect on him being able to play for another country in the future.

“It is not our purpose to do that, but we hope he can be with us on a very special and memorable occasion.”

Kosovo’s first ever match will take place against Haiti on March 5th, but will not prevent Januzaj representing anybody else, with him currently being available for Belgium, Albania, Turkey and Serbia as well.

Januzaj has completed 33 take-ons this season at a success rate of 55%, more than any other Manchester United player.
