Rumour: Arsenal eye up Lewandowski in £25m January bid

Arsenal are eyeing up Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski after the player declared that his proposed move to Bayern Munich on a summer Bosman is not a done deal. Arsenal have money to spend and are keen to sign a world class striker to provide competition to the on fire Giroud.

Reports suggest the Gunners are prepared to pay £25million to land Lewandowski in January despite him being available for free next summer.

Arsenal still covet controversial Liverpool striker Luis Suárez and are rumoured to be weighing up another tempt to bring Manchester United star Wayne Rooney to North London. Striking options seem thin at Arsenal but with Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Yaya Sanogo to come back to fitness many around the club were predicting a quiet January before a huge assault on the transfer market next summer.

The potential availability of Lewandowski seems to have changed that and Arsène Wenger may look to reinforce his title ambitions with a sensational swoop for the Dortmund star to join big money signing Mezut Özil.

£25m on a player with half a year left on his contract may seem a lot but Arsenal and Wenger may see it as a price worth paying to ward off rival suitors when Lewandowski becomes a free agent in July. Bayern may be the players first choice but Dortmund certainly don’t want to lose another player to their rivals so may see selling in January as their best option.

Lewandowski has expressed his interest is playing in the Premier League, stating “I don’t think it is a real big surprise that I have expressed a desire to play in England at some point in my career, the Premier League is one of the best and most exciting in the world because it is attractive for most of the world’s top players.”

Arsenal face competition from both Manchester clubs but may well have the upper hand if they continue playing as they are and have a healthy lead at the top of the table come January.
