Arsenal are demanding that Manchester United include Portuguese international Nani in any move to take club captain Thomas Vermaelen to Old Trafford, according to the The Daily Star.

The paper is reporting that the Gunners would prefer to receive the Portuguese as part of a swap deal, instead of a fee believed to be as high as £10 million.

Arsenal captain Vermaelen is unhappy with the lack of games that he has played in the past couple of seasons and recently it emerged that United were the club leading the race for his signature.

The Manchester club are looking to fill the void created by the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and were hoping that Vermaelen could be the man for that.

Nani has endured an equally frustrating time at his club and although it is not clear whether or not he desires a move away, the lure of regular football could prove to be too much. With Wenger having attempted to sign the winger before, clearly there is interest in making the move on Arsenal’s part.

Nani and Thomas Vermaelen started just 14 league games between them this season
