Louis Van Gaal might choose resignation over the axe.

The rumour mill brings forth news that under pressure Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal might just step down from his troubled post before the end of his term. After this season, Van Gaal will be having another year left in his contract, but apparently the pressure that is piling up in the job might just force Van Gaal to leave after the completion of this season according to the Mirror.

It is understood that Van Gaal’s family and loved ones are much worried about the pressure that he is having to cope with at Old Trafford. The 64-year old Dutchman at a recent press conference, hinted at his possible premature departure from United. Van Gaal had said that he might himself resign from his post if results don't improve and in that case, there might not arise a situation where he would be sacked.

Van Gaal had also mentioned earlier that the speculations and rumours that are floating about him in the media are affecting his family. The club is also perhaps aware that Van Gaal might retire a year earlier. The Manchester United boss in the past has walked away from posts, which he thought he was not being able to handle.

Van Gaal has come under a lot of scrutiny and criticism.

Van Gaal had taken charge of United after the sacking of David Moyes in 2014. Manchester United finished top four after his first season with the Red Devils. Also, he did make United qualify for the Champions League but United were knocked out in the first round.

Sadly, the philosophy he has been talking about this season has failed to make a visible impact.

If the Dutchman leaves, Ryan Giggs might fill his boots. Which might also see Sir Alex Ferguson returning as a behind the scenes advisor. Van Gaal has already said that Giggs is fit to be his No. 2 at United.

Van Gaal leaving will also make way for the presently out-of-job Jose Mourinho. Sources suggest the Portuguese is keen on taking on the managerial role at United. Mourinho has not yet been linked to any other club and is adamant about turning up at United.

Wayne Rooney seem to be resurging and United have won in their last game against Liverpool at Anfield, but their performance has been far from convincing. A few sparks were seen and decent goals were scored in their match against Swansea City but that's all.

Currently, anchester United is hanging on to the fifth spot in the English Premier League with 37 points.
