Manchester United’s thirst for a central midfield player has seen yet another midfielder linked with a summer move to the club, with Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano the latest name to be added to the Old Trafford side’s rumoured summer wish-list.

Reports suggest that the former Liverpool midfielder Mascherano, who has more frequently been deployed at centre back for Barcelona in recent seasons, could be about to return to the Premier League, with United keen on a move for the tough tackling Argentinian.

Mascherano spent three years at Anfield following his 2007 move from West Ham, before leaving for Barcelona in 2010. He has made 26 appearances in La Liga this season, but is believed to be a target for United, currently managerless following David Moyes’ sacking.

Whoever is in charge at the club next season is likely to be in for a busy summer of transfer activity as they attempt to reinvigorate a side that look set to finish seventh in this season’s Premier League.

Louis Van Gaal is the current favourite to succeed Moyes, and is set to be handed a hefty transfer budget to restore the club to the upper echelons of the Premier League table.
