Rumour: Manchester United preparing a £10 million bid for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen

Manchester United to offer £10 million for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen?

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £10m bid for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.

With the departure of Patrice Evra on the cards, United boss Louis van Gaal wants an experienced campaigner to go with the youth and exuberance of Luke Shaw. Another reason to explain his interest in Vermaelen is his versatility, i.e. his ability to play both centre back and left back.

The 28 year old Belgian joined Arsenal in 2009 from Ajax and is known to be a fan favourite at the Emirates. However his position in the team has not been certain, with Arsene Wenger preferring the partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny to him.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly admitted that he is unsure whether Thomas Vermaelen will still be with the Gunners this season. although he definitely wants him to stay at the Emirates.

With defense being one of van Gaal’s focus areas, the next few days will tell us if there is concrete interest from Manchester United in Thomas Vermaelen.
