Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o has confirmed on Twitter that he will not be fit enough to play in his country’s next World Cup match against Croatia.

Eto’o, who played for Chelsea last season, is seen as a crucial player for Cameroon and his loss against Croatia will be a huge blow.

Cameroon lost their opening game 1-0 against Mexico and whilst the score line suggests the game was tight Cameroon created very few chances. The best chances they created came through Eto’o and it will be interesting to see how they cope without their captain.

Eto’o wrote on Twitter: “The doctors confirm! I would probably not be able to play the match vs Croatia on Wed June 18th due to an injury on my knee causing me pain.”

Eto’o has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world including Barcelona and Inter Milan but he is now looking for a new club. The striker’s time at Chelsea was mixed, despite scoring a hat-trick against Manchester United the forward didn’t record the return he probably would have wanted too.

After the Croatia match Cameroon play their final group match against the hosts Brazil. Depending on results before that game it could be a must win for Cameroon and they will be hoping that their talisman is back for that match.

With nine Premier League goals this season Eto’o was Chelsea’s second highest scorer in the Premier League.
