Berlin, March 15 (IANS) Schalke came from behind to overcome Augsburg 2-1 at the opener of the 25th round of the German Bundesliga.

A brace by Klaas Jan Huntelaar in Friday’s match was enough to snatch three points on the road against Augsburg. The Royal Blues moved on third place for now meanwhile Augsburg stay on 6th place, reported Xinhua.

It is the 14th win of the season for Schalke whereas the hosts suffered their ninth loss of the season.

The hosts ensured a bright start on outsold home front when Tobias Werner broke the deadlock with just five minutes into the game. Werner capitalized on misplaced back pass by Tim Hoogland to beat custodian Ralf Faehrmann into the bottom right.

Schalke tried to respond but Augsburg remained dangerous on the counters as Raul Bobadilla, Halil Altintop and Andre Hahn nearly extended the home side’s advantage.

However, the visitors were finally able to overcome Augsburg’s bulwark when Klaan Jan Huntelaar poked home a follow up shot from very close range at the 33rd minute.

After the restart, the “Knappen” started where they left off as Dutchman Huntelaar finished the comeback into the open goal following a square pass by Sead Kolasinac inside the box at the 49th minute.

Augsburg frenetically pressed for the equalizer but Andre Hahn, Ragnar Klavan, Daniel Baier and Alexander Esswein failed to utilize their scoring opportunities in the closing period.

“This is a bitter defeat for us. We played a good match but we lacked in luck. Meanwhile Schalke needed two chances to score,” Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl said.
