#2 Poor use of possession

Senegal maintained possession throughout most of the match, ending up with 55% of the ball compared to Algeria's 45%. But that doesn't tell the whole story.

Algeria's most important chances, including Belaili's powerful goal, came in or around the time in the game where they had the over 65% possession.

Belaili's dangerous freekick came just before the 20th minute when Algeria held 80% of the possession.

Bounedjah's chances came just before the break as Algeria had 65% of the ball. By Belaili's goal in the 48th minute, the Algerians held over 70% possession.

Through much of the match, Senegal held a lot of possession but did nothing tangible with it. While the Lions had a pass success rate of 77%, compared to Algeria's 72%, it is notable that Senegal could manage just five key passes, compared to Algeria's seven.

The Algerians were more clinical, decisive and used their possession effectively bagging all three points.

#1 Poor defensive contribution

The Algerians were more defensive, focused on maintaining a strong blockade, and succedded in doing so. Notably, every single player on the Algerian team bar the substitutes and the goalkeeper put in a minimum of one tackle.

Senegal's defensive work lay solely on the shoulders of Kalidou Koulibaly who made eight clearances, twice as much as anyone else on the field. Alongside three tackles and two interceptions, Koulibaly was a strong and confident rock in the Senegalese defence.

However, his co-defenders Kouyate and Wague did not contribute as much and the team ended up paying for it. The defenders could not effectively keep up with the rapid Algerian attack that led to the only goal of the match.
