Sergio Busquets will sign a new deal

Barcelona have taken a major step in ensuring they continue to have one of the best midfield players in the world by reaching an agreement with Sergio Busquets to sign a new contract with the club by tomorrow.

The midfielder has been one of the most important players for the club ever since he broke into the first team under Pep Guardiola. He brings a lot of calm to the Catalan midfield and keeps the team ticking over.

He had been linked with Manchester City for quite some time and when Guardiola was announced as their new manager those rumours intensified but the deal never took place and now the 28-year-ol will strengthen his association with the club.

Busquets did not play the last game against Leganes but is set to start today against Atletico Madrid. The player’s influence was missed against the newcomers, something that was evident in their performance.

The midfielder will be signing a contract that will keep him at the Camp Nou until 2021, by which time he would be 33 years old. The contract will also include a buyout clause of around €200 million.

Barca – Atletico clash could be momentous in title race

It’s still early days in La Liga, but there’s a reason why this clash could be one of the most important going forward in the league. Both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have not made the ideal starts to this season.

Atletico were very ineffective against the first two teams they faced this season. Considering both of them were newly promoted sides the results they managed are not acceptable with the standards they set themselves.

They needed a last-gasp goal to rescue a draw in the game against Alaves and were then frustrated away from home against Leganes. But since then, they managed to steer things back on track by winning their next two matches with an aggregate score of 9-0.

Barcelona also had more than a small wobble in their first four games. The Catalans have struggled to keep a clean sheet in any of the matches so far and suffered a shock defeat against Alaves at home.

But after that defeat, they put 7 past Celtic in the Champions League and then thrashed Leganes 5-1. This game will decide which team will have huge ground to make up on leaders Real Madrid who are setting the pace at the top
