Sampaoli started as a player in the lower echelons of Newell's Old Boys, but a serious injury to tibia and fibula forced him to quit football at age 19.

The 56-year-old then turned to coaching and after directing several sets of the lower ranked teams in Argentina, he jumped to Juan Aurich of Peru in 2002.

He also managed the Chile national team from 2012 to 2016, the highlight being the 2015 Copa America triumph.
