Luis Suarez’s form last season with Liverpool

He is a goal machine. He is unstoppable when he starts to run at defences. He is, and will be a prized possession for any club he is part of. But, you should never forget the cliche that, ‘with plus comes a minus’. And, it’s no different in Suarez’s case as well. He is one of the modern day dynamos on a football pitch, but, Suarez’ demeanor can get really hasty, and putrid. At the end of the day though, it all boils down to one thing. Luis Suarez is the package that renders the very good and the very bad.

Luis Suarez was in an absolutely devastating goal-scoring touch for the entirety of the last Premier League campaign. He could find the back of the net from 40 yards out. He could also make the goalkeeper look inconsequential with his precision free-kicks. And for once Suarez was making headlines for all the right reasons. Brendan Rodgers and the Liverpool hierarchy received accolades for helping Suarez redeem himself, and adorn the Liverpool shirt once again.

The Uruguyan, over the course of the season, gave the impression that he had learnt from his mistakes, and it was very good news for everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club. He finished the season with 31 goals and 12 assists to his name. Suarez was here to stay. He was here to continue delighting all of us.

Luis Suarez at the World Cup

Weeks prior to the World Cup though, Luis Suarez found himself injured, and in serious doubt for Uruguay at the showpiece event. He went on to miss the first group game against Costa Rica. However, Luis Suarez returned to face England, scored 2 sublime goals – contrasting to one another, and dumped the Poms out of the World Cup.

Then came Uruguay’s crucial clash against Italy. Suarez looked menacing in front of goal throughout the game, and Italy were holding their nerve with the scoreline at 0-0. It was 78 minutes on the clock, and Suarez, seemingly unprovoked, got really close to the Italian defender Chiellini, and bit him on his shoulder. This incident required a retrospective action from Football’s governing body, which has ruled out Suarez from taking part in any football activity until the 26th Oct 2014.

Should Liverpool sell Luis Suarez to Barcelona?

Purely from Liverpool’s perspective, Suarez will surely miss the first 9 Premier League games of the season, Match days 1, 2, and 3 in the UEFA Champions League, and the fourth round of the Capital One cup. In all, when Suarez returns to action for Liverpool, he will have missed 13 games, and that is a huge predicament for any side that boasts of the Uruguayan. Liverpool had to contend with a similar situation during the 2013/14 Premier League campaign when Suarez missed the first 6 games, after getting himself banned for 10 games for biting Branislav Ivanovic during a match between Liverpool and Chelsea in the 2012/13 Premier League season.

Coming to the bone of contention of this article, should Liverpool Football Club dump their talisman, Luis Suarez? It’s the third time that Suarez has been involved in such a transgression as a Liverpool player, and it’s extremely tough for a brand such as Liverpool to put up with Suarez’ erratic behavior. Suarez’ value is deemed to be somewhere around 80 million pounds, and despite what has transpired, the Catalan giants Barcelona are understood to still be keen on the acquisition of Luis Suarez. Now, the apparent question will be whether Liverpool should take that option, and offload one of the key personnel in Liverpool and Rodgers’ scheme of things?

Brendan Rodgers’ big decision on Luis Suarez

Personally what I think is that Liverpool must dig deep, and find out the root cause of Suarez’ aberration from time to time. There’s got to be something really serious to provoke any human being into such an activity. What Suarez has done time and again can’t be a resultant of heat of the moment alone. And, if Suarez goes on to play 2000 minutes of football, following his return to action after the ban, there’s no guarantee that he will be involved in one such incident again. However, Suarez is the kind of individual, who oozes unpredictability, which is the very reason why Liverpool would contemplate parting company with one of vital cogs in their unit.

Bottom line is every player renders you something on and off the pitch. Sergio Aguero, despite his sublime talent, continues to associate himself with torn hamstrings, and calf strain ever so often. It’s difficult to say whether Manchester City FC will ever get the diminutive Argentine playing for them over a given Premier League campaign, but if you ask the reigning English Premier League champions whether they would even consider a bid for him, they will have a staunch ‘No’ up their sleeve. Albeit scenarios are different, what Suarez or Aguero can render you is unprecedented, and priceless.

Putting myself in Brendan Rodgers’ shoes, I would never, at any cost contemplate letting Suarez go. He gives me everything I want in a footballer. He gives me 110% every time he takes the pitch. He can play wide-left, wide-right, and through the middle. He’s the comprehensive package there can ever be, and purely for that reason, I’d bear with his bad side, and continue having him on my team sheet.
