Rugby players are punished by being sent to the ‘sin bin’ for a fixed period.

Sin bins have been in use in sports like ice hockey and rugby with match officials punishing players by making them sit out of the game for certain periods of time, leaving the team a man short.

And now, that concept might be introduced in football with sin-bins being on trial in amateur leagues in Holland.

UEFA chief Michel Platini was also quoted saying, “I would make it like rugby, punishing the offender with 10 or 15 minutes out of the game.”

Welsh FA chief executive and International Football Association Board (IFAB) member Jonathan Ford said, “Sin-bins have been mooted in the past – one would expect that it will be one of topics the new advisory panels take up.”

There will be two panels – one with ex-players and coaches while the other panel will consist of officials and experts. Both panels will meet in March to discuss the proposition. Both panels will report to the IFAB, which consists of four British associations and FIFA.

The calls for a sin-bin came after players were harshly punished by being sent off and awarding the opposition a penalty.

The offside laws may also be looked into when they meet in March.
