Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on keeping Rio Ferdinand at Old Trafford despite the confirmed reports of Ferdinand being handed a testimonial by the club.

The ace defender is almost done with his contract with Manchester United and is expected to leave this year and move abroad. He moved to Old Trafford from Leeds for £29.1m in 2002.

It is also being speculated that Ferdinand might think of an one-year extension of his contract at the club citing Sir Ferguson’s keen interest on keeping him. However, no opponent has yet been confirmed for his testimonial game, which might take place at the start of next season.

Sir Alex Ferguson said, “I have spoken to Rio. I would imagine the best thing for him would be to stay but at this moment in time he is more concerned about getting an opponent for his testimonial game.”

But we want him to stay and I am sure his representatives will be talking about that with (chief executive) David (Gill),” he concluded.
