As the Soccerex Global Convention moves to Manchester, one of its club’s most famous sons, Manchester United Legend and 1966 World Cup-Winner Sir Bobby Charlton is the next world-class attendee to be announced for the Convention taking place September 6-10, 2014.

A football icon across the world, Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes who survived the tragic Munich Air Disaster. He went on to become arguably England’s greatest ever midfielder, earning 106 caps, scoring a national record 49 goals and lifting the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 as a World Cup Winner. A symbol of Manchester United, he made a total 758 appearances, scoring a club record 249 goals, winning one European Cup, three English League titles and one FA Cup.

Since his retirement Charlton has continued his work within the football industry as a member on the board of directors at Manchester United since 1984 and as a global ambassador for the club. He also serves as the (honorary) president of the National Football Museum, another iconic football venue in Manchester which will feature as part of next year’s Global Convention.

In a project away from football, Charlton founded Find A Better Way, a charity which was established to improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by landmines. The charity aims to develop technology to accelerate the detection and safe removal of landmines globally.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie said, “To welcome Sir Bobby back to another Soccerex event is a huge privilege for me and the company. Having graced Soccerex on multiple occasions around the world, it is most fitting that he will be one our guests of honour as we return to the birthplace of Soccerex, Manchester. Even though we’re a football business event, having a global star of the game in attendance will offer our delegates an extra dimension in their Global Convention experience, which firmly complements the structured networking and conference sessions we provide.”

Sir Bobby Charlton joins an early list of confirmed names who will be attending the Global Convention including FIFA President Joseph Blatter, FIFA Vice-President Jim Boyce and British Olympic Association Chairman Lord Coe.

The Soccerex Global Convention is a five-day football business event which is returning to Manchester after 12 years on the road around the world. The event will see the elite of the world’s football industry come together to learn, debate, network and most importantly do business.
