SK Adda: Which is worse? Umpiring or refereeing mistakes - and why?

Refereeing involves more mistakes. A referee has to take decisions quickly while keeping a check on 22 players. The slightest of mistakes can cause a huge difference in a match. It’s total chaos. However, an umpire can very well refer to the second or third umpire, and also has to keep an eye on at the most two players at a time.

Well, given the large fan following, it has to be football because referees have even been attacked by spectators. Howard Webb is truly lucky not to have been attacked by fans after his blunder at South Africa.

I played cricket when I was kid. Now since I’m grown up I play football.

SK thinks: Cool story bruh.

Karun de Bruyne

I personally feel cricket is the most affected, but not worse. The umpire can easily miss a nick or he can also misjudge an LBW appeal. This can change the whole complexion of the game. But the decision can be overturned by a third umpire. In football, mistakes will happen only if the referee's view was completely away from the scenario or maybe he is forced to give the decision because of consecutive fouls from the team. The decision cannot be overturned also. So to make football more competitive we should use decision review system (DRS).

Football, because many matches have been affected by wrong offside decisions which have cost teams various titles. Also, there is no technical support for this issue. Goal line technology is also not fully implemented yet, and who can forget Lampard's ghost goal vs Germany in 2010 World Cup? In cricket we have found a decent solution in DRS which may not be foolproof, but is still a good option and it will get pretty accurate in the future.

Aritro Pramanik

Refereeing mistakes are worse because umpires have the option to review their decisions using DRS, and players can also do the same if they are not happy with the decision.

Refereeing in football. Especially because the ref’s decision is final, regardless if he is wrong. It hurts you and disturbs the whole world.

SK thinks: Wow. Well that escalated quickly.

Dostain Baloch

2006 World Cup final. Zidane shouldn't have been red carded because it was that player's fault.

SK thinks: To be fair, the red card was very much justified. No player deserves to stay on the field after sticking their head in an opposition player’s chest cavity, regardless of who instigated what.

Punit Pathak

Vampiring is easy refereeing is tough.

SK thinks: I’m sorry, wha?

Priyanshu Sinha

Footballers fake a lot of incidents and sometimes that causes a big error in decision making for the referee, and their 'mistakes' can be termed 'mistakes'. Umpires just make errors of judgement, and sometimes you can review even that. Claps to umpires. Salute to referees.

Abhinandan Gupta

Referee, because his mistakes may end careers.

SK thinks: Dayum. What kind of football do you watch?
