Liverpool had to dig deep to subdue a spirited Southampton side with two second-half strikes from Mohamed Salah to get a 3-2 win in the Premier League on Sunday, November 24.

Injuries to two key players Aaron Ramsdale and Jan Bednarek saw the Saints turn to Alex McCarthy and Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The hosts hoped to make some progress towards moving away from the bottom of the table, with just four points from their first 11 games.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were also forced into changes with a setback suffered by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Conor Bradley started at right-back while Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai replaced Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds dominated most of the first period, enjoying most of the ball. They took the lead in the 30th minute when Szobsozlai nicked the ball off Flynn Downes and scored to make it 1-0.

That seemed to trigger a change in the Saints' mentality as they began to create chances. They earned a penalty in the 42nd minute, a questionable decision concerning the location of the foul made on Tyler Dibling by Andrew Robertson. Adam Armstrong stepped up and saw his spot-kick saved but knocked home the rebound to level the scores.

In the second half, Southampton stunned the visitors, taking the lead in the 52nd minute. A quick counter saw Armstrong set up Mateus Fernandes to fire home a great goal.

Liverpool pushed ahead and eventually found an equaliser through Salah. Gravenberch's great ball over the top found the Egyptian, who found space behind the defence and scored coolly, making it 2-2 in the 65th minute.

The attacker then made it 3-2 after 82 minutes, scoring from the spot. A cross from Salah hit Yukinari Sugawara on the arm and he made no mistake from the spot-kick to hand his side the lead.

The result now means Liverpool hold a sizeable eight-point advantage at the top of the table. Southampton, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom with their path out of relegation looking difficult. Here are the player ratings:

Liverpool Player Ratings

Caoimhin Kelleher - 7/10

He made a fine stop to deny Armstrong from the spot but was unlucky with the rebound. He made three saves in all and continues to look solid in Alisson's absence.

Ad

Conor Bradley - 6/10

He had a decent outing but was unable to replicate Alexander-Arnold's creativity going forward, which seemed to affect Liverpool at times.

Virgil van Dijk - 5.5/10

An inexplicable backheel in his own box led to Southampton's penalty but he was otherwise solid on the night.

Ibrahima Konate - 5/10

An unusually nervy outing for the Frenchman who has been great this season. He struggled to deal with the Saints attackers and earned an early yellow that put him in trouble.

Ad

Andrew Robertson - 6/10

Enjoyed some success going forward, creating five chances and had eight passes in the final third. However, his foul led to the penalty and he had a few nervy moments in defence.

Ryan Gravenberch - 7/10

Gravenberch continues to excel as one of Liverpool's best players under Arne Slot. Apart from a beautiful assist, he finished with 10 passes into the final third, three chances created, two interceptions and five recoveries.

Ad

Curtis Jones - 6/10

Jones linked up well going forward but was otherwise silent for most of the game. The Reds seemed to have more control once he was replaced by Mac Allister.

Dominik Szoboszlai - 6.5/10

An up-and-down season continued as he finally got on the scoresheet in the league this season. He had a few more chances to make a difference but failed to do so.

Ad

Mohamed Salah - 8/10

Despite being kept quiet early on in the game, Salah showed up when Liverpool needed him the most. A sharp finish to level the game followed by a cool penalty helped the side regain the lead and he now has 10 goals and six assists in the league.

Darwin Nunez - 5.5/10

The striker had a frustrating time out as he was unable to really get into the game. He could have delivered a better ball for Diaz in the second half prior to Salah's goal.

Cody Gakpo - 6/10

He had a decent outing but did not do much to convince Slot to get more minutes ahead of Diaz, who looked lively replacing him.

Substitutes

Alexis Mac Allister - 6/10

Provided much-needed stability to the midfield when he came in for the last half an hour.

Luis Diaz - 7/10

A lively cameo saw the Colombian prove to be a threat, getting three shots and creating two chances in just 28 minutes of action.

Wataru Endo - N/A

He came on too late and did not play enough minutes to merit a rating.
