#2 – Lionel Messi
At number 2, Lionel Messi. The only player to score at least 50 goals this year but unfortunately, still not the best forward in the world. He ended up 5th in the final Ballon d'Or list and nobody will ever know how.
The Argentine was criticised a lot for his performance at the World Cup this year but what can a player do when he has little to no support from the other 10 on the pitch? His performances were not on par with the standards he has set for himself but anyone who watched the matches will know that he did all he could.
Meanwhile, for his club, Barcelona, he was on fire from start to finish. He has played in 3 different positions for the Catalan side – RW, ST & CAM – and has taken his game to another level.
With 51 goals under his belt in 54 appearances, Messi has been sensational this year. Adding to that, he also notched 26 assists – with 10 of them coming in LaLiga 2018/19 season so far.
