Collymore: Gary Neville is only class of 92 member who should manage Manchester United

Stan Collymore has told Manchester United fans that Ryan Giggs is not the long-term solution to United’s managerial post – but believes Gary Neville could have a role to play at some point in the future.

Giggs held his first press conference as interim manager of United on Friday, taking over for the final four games of the season after David Moyes was sacked from his position on Tuesday, bringing some acclaim for his attitude to affairs in the hot-seat.

But Collymore has warned against placing him on a pedestal, believing Gary Neville to be the only member of the class of ’92 worthy of playing a key role in United’s coaching staff currently.

Collymore told Bleacher Report, “Gary Neville’s comments and Gary’s way of doing things recently, going into the media to show and talk about his football philosophy.

“And people have gone, ‘he talks a lot of sense’. Have we heard anything from Ryan Giggs to that effect? No. Did Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp? Yes, we heard from them on television, we heard from them about a philosophy, before they were coaching.

“Then Gary Neville has rolled his sleeves up and got his hands dirty with England. Has there been an impact? I believe there has, Roy Hodgson was a 4-4-2 man, when he came in and he’s changed and looked at different systems, thanks to his coaching staff – which Gary Neville is a part.

“The third thing with Neville is, has he thrown his lot in with the class of 92? That perhaps saying David Moyes is a lame duck, wanting David Moyes out. No, actually the opposite. [Neville has argued] David Moyes should have got long-term, I feel uncomfortable that David Moyes has been sacked etc.

“The only person out of the class of 92, I believe in the next five years that should be anywhere near a Manchester United senior coaching role is Gary Neville.”
