Liverpool players celebrate after Raheem Sterling’s second goal of the night

Liverpool travelled to Bournemouth in the Quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup on the back of a 0-3 defeat at Old Trafford at the hands of Manchester United.

Brendan Rodgers kept the same formation as their last match but made three changes, with Kolo Toure, Lazar Markovic and Lucas Leiva coming on for Glen Johnson, Joe Allen and Alberto Moreno.

High-flying Bournemouth nearly took the lead in the 4th minute when Callum Wilson took advantage of Liverpool’s lack of confidence to breeze past their defence. His left-footed shot was off-target though and his miss proved costly soon after.

Liverpool were passing the ball extremely well and their first goal came when youngster Raheem Sterling, who once again assumed the striking responsibilities, completed a move consisting of 52 passes. This goal was Sterling’s first in three months.

Soon after, Markovic opened his Liverpool account with a perfectly placed side-footed shot from the edge of the box. The second half saw Sterling increase Liverpool’s advantage. But, that was cut back to 2 by former Everton player Dan Gosling.

Bournemouth weren’t out of it though as they created a handful of chances in the second half with Gosling hitting the post from a rasping left-footed shot from outside the box.

Liverpool held on to win the match and enter the semis to join Chelsea, Sheffield United and Tottenham.

Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool: Raheem Sterling (20’)

Liverpool took the lead in style as they made Bournemouth chase shadows for a few minutes before taking the lead. A deep cross by Markovic was met by Jordan Henderson who headed it first time to Raheem Sterling to finish with his head. Raheem Sterling’s free header at the far post was their 52nd pass of the move!

Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool: Lazar Markovic (27’)

Another slick move by Liverpool resulted in Philippe Coutinho on the left byline and he cut inside to send a stinging shot towards the Bournemouth goal. The goalkeeper’s save could only reach Lazar Markovic, who was lurking on the edge of the box, and he calmly sent a precise side-footed shot inside the far post to increase Liverpool’s advantage.

Bournemouth 0-3 Liverpool: Raheem Sterling (51’)

Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana were involved in a swift counter-attack by Liverpool. Sterling’s trickery fooled the defender after receiving the pass from Lallana and the young striker calmly slotted the ball past Artur Boruc.

Bournemouth 1-3 Liverpool: Dan Gosling (57’)

Dan Gosling put doubts in Liverpool’s minds when he maintained Bournemouth’s record of having scored in every home game. His left-footed shot went through the legs of Kolo Toure and the pace in his shot carried the ball past Brad Jones in Liverpool’s goal.
