English Championship side Queens Park Rangers FC have strengthened the backroom staff of manager Harry Redknapp with the appointment of Steve McClaren as his assistant.

In an official statement Harry Redknapp said, “I am delighted to have been able to bring Steve in. Everyone in the game knows what a top coach he is and he’ll add something different to the group, regardless of how long he is with us for. This is a very important season for us and I wanted to look at freshening up the whole place, not just the playing side.”

“I want new ideas, different opinions and another experienced head to speak to. That’s what Steve brings. Along with Kevin (Bond) and Joe (Jordan) I’ve got a brilliant backroom team and their input is going to be so important for me this season. Steve adds to the excellent staff I already have here,” Redknapp further added.

After relegation from the Premier League, Queens Park Rangers are looking at a tough season in the Championship with an aim to get back into the top tier though Redknapp has called it a very difficult task ahead.

Meanwhile Steve McClaren said, “I’m delighted to take up this position offered to me by Harry and QPR.

“Whilst it still remains my ambition to manage again this gives me an ideal opportunity to stay involved and work on the field with one of the top managers in this country and a very ambitious club.”

“Rest assured, I’ll be doing all I can for Harry, the club and the fans to help QPR return to the Premier League,” McClaren added.

Steve McClaren learned his coaching from Jim Smith at Derby County and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United as their assistants before being the manager at FC Middlesbrough from 2001 to 2006.

Under his reign the club won the 2004 Carling Cup, recorded their highest Premier League finish as seventh and reached the 2006 UEFA Cup final, which the club lost 0-4 against FC Sevilla, the last match in charge for McClaren before he moved on.

And then came the big task of coaching England, which didn’t work out to well for McClaren as his team didn’t qualify for the Euro 2008 and this led to him getting fired. This brought McClaren to Twente Enschede in the Netherlands, who under him won their first-ever Dutch title in the 2009/10 season.

Thereafter the former England boss McClaren had worked for German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg and English Championship side Nottingham Forest, but he failed at both clubs. He returned to Twente, but lasted only a little over a year.
