Gareth Bale became the most expensive man in world football at the time of his signing for Real Madrid in the summer of 2013, when he moved from Tottenham Hotspur.

The record of British players abroad is not particularly successful but Bale has astonishingly bucked that trend by twice becoming a World Club Champion and four-time European Cup winner.

Bale's match-winning contributions in the 2014 and 2018 Champions League finals will live long in the memory and were absolutely priceless for his club. No-one will ever dispute that £90.9 million was money well spent.
