The Miracle of 1989 WC U20

As we are approaching the QF of the U20 WC, and Nigeria is one of the qualified teams so far, it is good time to remember one of the most incredible things ever happened in the world of the game.

That was in the 1989 U20 WC QF, Nigeria vs. Soviet Union. The game was held in Dammam in Saudi Arabia, and I have attended the game in the stadium myself.

The Soviet had such a strong team, and were one of the strong favorites for the WC. The Soviet team dominated the first half and by the end of the first half, it was 2-0. It was almost like a training session. There was no comparison at all.

The party was not over, the Soviets second two more in the second half. Last goal was scored by Oleg Salenko, who in five years, he would be the top scorer of the 1994 WC together with Stoichkov.

I remember, the Soviet team took out of the stars of the games, to save him for the SF. But, the unimaginable happened. Nigeria scored 4 goals in 23 minutes:

At the 61st minutes, Nigeria scored a goal from a free kick. At the 75th minute, the same player , Ohenhen, scored one of best ever free kicks I seen in my life. (that player scored the winner against the host, Saudi Arabia, at the last minute in the opening game, also from an amazing free kick).

By the 84th minute, it was 4-4. I remember, the whole stadium was standing on chairs for the last 15 minutes. We could not believe our eyes. They played extra time, then Nigeria won by PKs.

Nigeria reached the final to lose to Portugal 2-0This is a short quick video about all the 8 goals of that amazing game

The funny part, that when it was 4-0 for USSR, some people started to leave the stadium, as the other city, Jeddah, was hosting THE big game, Argentina vs. Brazil, and the game was about to start. I wonder about their amazement when they knew the final score.
