The story of England's heart-breaking affair with penalty shootouts

England Team after their quarter final exit against Italy during the 2012 Euro

Euro 2004

It was the quarter final round and England were playing Portugal. David Beckham of all people missed with England's first kick, but England got a lifeline when Rui Costa missed Portugal's third kick. The shootout went to sudden death and Darius Vaasell failed from the spot while taking the seventh kick for England, making this England's fourth exit on penalties.

FIFA World Cup 2006

England were ready for a shootout this time. They had Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham. All of these players were really good kick takers. This time luck deserted the English at first. Captain Beckham was injured and had to be taken off and then later Wayne Rooney got sent off. England still managed to take the game to penalties. Lampard failed to score with England's first shot and then Gerrard with England's third. That's something you don't normally see happening. Portugal also failed to convert their second and third kicks. Carragher took England's fourth and scored, but he was asked to retake it as the referee hadn't blown the whistle. Carragher failed with his second attempt and then Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner for Portugal.

Euro 2012

The opponents were the Italians and they were the first to miss after Montolivo failed with Italy's second kick. Ashley Young and Ashley Cole failed while taking the third and fourth kicks for England respectively and Italy scored theirs in the meanwhile. Diamanti scored the final kick for the Italians sending them through to the semifinals and giving England more nightmares.

England may or may not reach the quarterfinals this year. But Roy Hodgson will be preparing his men well. They have good kick takers like Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Rooney Lambert and Baines, and it would be cruel if they go out on penalties once again.
