1980: Playing against Pakistan in Lahore, Alan Border became the first man to score 150 or more runs in both innings of a Test match.

1994: India’s premier all-rounder and captain Kapil Dev retired after playing 131 Tests for the country. He ended his career with 434 wickets at an average of 29.64. He also scored 5,248 runs at an average of 31.05 with 8 centuries and 27 half-centuries.

2003: Australia beat India by 125 runs at Johannesburg to win the ICC Cricket World Cup for the 3rd time. Ricky Ponting played a captain’s knock of 140* off 121 balls to hand India a mammoth target of 360 to chase. India were all out for just 234 in the 40th over.

1968: Former Real Madrid captain and one of the Champions League’s best defenders Fernando Hierro was born in Vélez-Málaga.

1994: Birthday of Manchester United‘s Nick Powell.
