Ashley Young has been receiving consistent criticism from United fans in the last few years due to his performances on the pitch, but one has to admit that the Englishman has been a fantastic servant for the club over the years.

Young started his football career with Watford, rising through the youth academy and going on to feature for the first team. He improved massively and was even adjudged the club’s young player of the year at the end of the 2004/05 season. Young played as a winger and showed promise in front of the goal, prompting clubs to vie for his signature.

The Englishman eventually moved to Aston Villa in January 2007 and eventually caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson, who brought him to Old Trafford in the summer of 2011, in a deal worth £17m. It was the start of a glorious association that would be mutually beneficial for both parties.

Young went on to win every trophy on offer in English football with Manchester United. He won the F.A. Cup, the Premier League, the League Cup as well as the Community Shield. In addition, Young also has a UEFA Europa League medal to his name.

The Englishman initially started off as a winger who could play either side of the pitch but was modified into a full-back during the realm of Louis van Gaal. It proved to be a stellar decision, as Young adjusted his game brilliantly and has been fantastic for United in the new role. Recently, the Englishman has dropped down the pecking order, but still remains an important member of the squad. He is also the current Manchester United skipper.

Few players have adapted so well to a change in position over the last decade. Young’s impact as a winger as well as a full-back since joining Manchester United makes him one of the club’s best signings of the last decade.
