2. Liverpool vs Manchester United

This rivalry is about two clubs that think they are the biggest in the world. This rivalry was made during the Industrial Revolution; Liverpool and Manchester United were both powerhouses in the 19th century.

Liverpool had one of the greatest ports in the world and Manchester was where cotton was made. Liverpool had great alliances with Manchester until they became enemies because Manchester decided to build a ship canal to cut Liverpool out of the process.

Despite all of this, they both punched above their weight in football, having two of the biggest clubs in England. Manchester United dominated the 50's and 60's whilst Liverpool dominated the 70's and 80's.

The hatred reached a boiling point when a young Scotsman named Sir Alex Ferguson took over the reins at Manchester United. He would go on to define the relationship between the clubs.

"My greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their f****** perch, and you can print that," he was quoted as saying.

Ferguson won an astonishing 13 league titles in 20 years, and added 4 FA cups and 2 Champions Leagues to the trophy cabinet. The Manchester United players who brought this success were fueled with the hatred for Liverpool put into them by Ferguson.

"I can't stand Liverpool, I can't stand Liverpool people, I can't stand anything to do with them," Gary Neville once said.

A young Steven Gerrard was instilled with the same hatred by his dad. He was quoted as saying, "A mate owned a Bryan Robson top. We were kicking about, and I asked if I could be Robbo for a while. My dad looked out and went ballistic. He wasn’t having his kid dragging the Gerrard name through the gutter. I thought we’d have to move!"

This rivalry does not look like it will die down any time soon.

3. Celtic vs Rangers

This rivalry is about two teams who have different beliefs. A large number of Irish Catholics arrived in Glasgow in the 19th century whilst the booming shipping industry brought more protestants to Glasgow for work, creating a segregated city.

This distinction intensified as football was brought into it, with Rangers being formed in 1872 and Celtic coming into existence in 1888. This would become one of the biggest rivalries in the world, and a healthy one too. Between them, the two clubs have over 100 Scottish league titles.

After joining in 1986 as a player-manager, Graeme Souness won the Rangers their first title in 9 years and also signed Mo Johnston, a Catholic player and a former Celtic player. The games between the two teams are played at a fast pace, and the rivalry is every bit as fierce as the biggest ones in world football.
