Top 6 saves by Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea

David De Gea arrived at Old Trafford with the uniqueness of being the most expensive goalkeeper (17.8 million) in not only Manchester United history but also English football history. That was a given, considering the fact that he was Spain's next big thing after Iker Casillas and that he'd won the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup with Atletico Madrid at such a young age. With Edwin van der Sar retiring, De Gea had large boots to fill at Manchester United. Though he had a tough time adapting to the physicality of the Barclays Premier League in the beginning, he has cemented his place as the no. 1 for United and has put his name in the top ten in the world.

This was the moment of the match, one of the biggest talking points of the derby day occurred when substitute Jordan Henderson saw De Gea off his line and delicately executed an audacious lob that looked destined for the top corner.

Liverpool fans had started celebrating a moment of pure inspiration but their joy was short-lived as De Gea sprung from the ground to snatch the ball and put it out of harms way. It seemed that it was the Spaniards day and there was no getting past him.

De Gea surely made his presence felt that day with a memorable match-saving performance and put a tick in the box for why Sir Aelx Ferguson paid nearly 18 million for the 20-year-old.

This was a homecoming of some sorts for the Spaniard as he returned to the Spanish capital after his big money move from Atletico Madrid to Manchester United. Playing Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu was one of the monumental tasks that United faced and David De Gea pulled off some blinders on the night to keep the score at 1-1.

Fabio Coentrao made the most of a poor clearance by Rio Ferdinand inside the box inside the first few minutes and tried a curling effort with the inside of his boot. The shot looked like it hit the post but the replays confirmed that it was a fingertip save by De Gea that ensured it did on a night to remember.

Things however started falling apart in the second half for United as Ramires and Eden Hazard were involved in a comeback for the Blues.

In the last kick of the game, Juan Mata had the chance to send Chelsea into the semi-finals of the FA Cup with only David De Gea standing between him and the goal. From a point blank range, de Gea saved the shot from the tip of his toe to force a replay at Stamford Bridge which they eventually lost 1-0.

This match was one of the turning points in Manchester United's quest for the Premier League title in the 2011-12 season. United came from 3 goals behind to draw level at Stamford Bridge. In the first minute of added time, Paul Scholes obstructed David Luiz 25 yards from the United goal, leading Howard Webb to award a freekick.

Juan Mata, who had played a part in each of the goals that had given Chelsea a 3-0 lead, hit a fantastic 25yard freekick that was arrowing into the top right-hand corner until De Gea, twisting as he flew across the goalmouth, used his right hand to turn it around the angle of bar and post.

This was a moment of genius by David De Gea as he repaid the faith shown by Sir Alex by restoring him in the starting eleven.
