Top Liverpool goals

top liverpool goals

Here, we will take a look at some of the top Liverpool goals. Fondly called The Reds, Liverpool FC have had a history to remember with 18 English League Championships, 7 FA Cups, 8 League Cups, 15 FA Community Shields, 5 European cups, 3 UEFA Cups and 3 UEFA Super Cups. But since the inception of the English Premier League, Liverpool have failed to win it even once. But they kept their European sights high by consistently being in the top four in the early 2000’s.

After Rafa Benitez left the club on a high, it was up to Roy Hodgson to bring the club forward. But inconsistent results and an England call up for the Englishman meant a departure for him who was replaced for a second managerial stint by Kenny Dalglish. Dalglish brought Liverpool their first trophy in six years with a triumph in the English League Cup. But a career low of eighth position for Liverpool was what signalled Dalglish’s departure and in came the rising manager of the Premier League, Brendan Rodgers.

Though he met with a disappointing start, the Board still had faith in him to turn things around which he did in the recent season that went by, making City bite their nails for the title as Liverpool were close at their heels. So, lets have a look at some of the goals that shaped up this exciting history of The Reds over the years.

5. Fernando Torres vs Blackburn (H), 2008/2009

Fernando Torres was quite high in the goalscoring charts that season and he justified his position with a peach of a goal against Blackburn at Anfield. Receiving a long pass from the Liverpool half, Torres collected it in the Blackburn box by taking it on his chest and firing it in on the volley. A brilliant goal by the Spaniard who helped his team to finish 2nd in the Premier League.

4. Luis Suarez vs Chelsea (A), 2011/2012

A much maligned striker for his weird personality, Luis Suarez has much more to his arsenal than just his biting teeth and slippery hands. He has a way of finding goals and, some of them, in the most amazing fashion. This stunner came against Chelsea. Suarez took the ball from the sidelines, nutmegged Ashley Cole, cut inside with some blistering pace outpacing another defender before aiming a shot at the near post which hit Essien and went in. An impossible angle to score and an impossible dribbling ability to execute. A moment of brilliance from the Uruguayan. Though an own goal due to Essien’s touch, the goal pretty much belonged to Suarez.

3. Sebastian Coates vs QPR (A), 2011/2012

The Uruguayan defender didn’t have a particularly blessing career in Liverpool as he was sidelined for most of the 2013/2014 season. But some goals like this just put a bright light on the 25-year old’s career. As the match reached the 53rd minute, it was a stalemate. A corner was taken in Liverpool’s favour. As the ball was cleared from the far post, it began to fall near Coates who didn’t wait and executed an overhead scissor kick to score the first goal of the match. Though Liverpool lost the match, through late goals by Mackie and Cisse, the sheer acrobatics of the defender makes this goal one of the best in the history of the Reds.

2. Luis Suarez vs Norwich City (A), 2011/2012

The Uruguayan forward brought forth another moment of sheer class of the highest magnitude with this goal. Although the Reds finished 8th in the Premier League that season, this goal helped them to finish off Norwich quite convincingly by a 3 goal margin. Here, Suarez collected a clearance by Glen Johnson from a Norwich corner, beat Ward with some brute strength, dribbled it a little bit ahead of the halfway line and hit an incredible shot over the keeper and inside the net. A truly miraculous goal explaining the Uruguayan’s credibility.

1. Xabi Alonso vs Newcastle (A), 2006/2007

After some FA Cup Heroics last season, Xabi Alonso was back for the Reds with a moment of amazement from the Spaniard as he pounced on a mistake from N’Zogbia inside the Liverpool half and fired in a dipping shot over the helpless keeper, Steve Harper, and into the net. It helped his team to win 2-0 over a strong Newcastle sid and also took every fan by storm as it emulated the goal scored by England legend David Beckham.
