Rumour: Tottenham Hotspur leading the race for free agent Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand was the rock at the back for Manchester United for over a decade

Rio Ferdinand is a prime target for Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur after the former England international decided to leave Manchester United.

Ferdinand announced he would leave the club he signed for over a decade ago recently and the centre-back is a target for many clubs with his services now on the market.

Tottenham are reportedly tracking the defender and lead the race for the former Leeds and West Ham defender, according to the Metro. Spurs are competing with newly promoted QPR, who are also keen on bringing Ferdinand to London this summer. Turkish giants Galatasaray are keen on the Ferdinand, while LA Galaxy are also believed to be monitoring the situation with a lucrative offer on the table from America.

Tottenham are planning to offload Michael Dawson with Crystal Palace interested, which leaves the Lilywhites short at the back. Ferdinand is the ideal candidate to replace the experienced Dawson and it is thought the former Manchester United defender is keen to join the north London side.

The new Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is expected to follow up the clubs interest in Rio Ferdinand with Daniel Levy a keen fan of the centre-back.
