Trent Alexander-Arnold talks about the corner that destroyed Barcelona's Champions League dream
What’s the story?
Trent Alexander-Arnold before the UEFA Champions League final, talks about what was going through his mind and what his thought process was while taking the corner that resulted in Liverpool's winner against Barcelona.
In case you didn’t know...
Liverpool thrashed Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League semi finals to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate and thus completed a massive turnaround to shock the whole of football fraternity.
The goal that broke Barcelona's dreams of winning a treble was Divock Origi's second goal against Barcelona assisted by Alexander-Arnold as he caught the Blaugrana defense napping.
The heart of the matter
At 3-3 on aggregate, Liverpool won a corner and the Scouser spotted an opportunity to punish some laidback Barcelona defending. He fired the ball in quickly and picked out an unmarked Divock Origi who slotted it home and secured a berth for Liverpool in the Champions League final.
When asked about his thought process on the corner that won Liverpool the tie, Alexander-Arnold said:
"I always try to be one step ahead of my opponents, because that's how you get the best out of yourself and the better of them.
"In that split second against Barca, I noticed the opportunity and I used it.
"I haven't thought about it beyond what it meant for the game itself and the club. It's hard to sit back and reflect on individual moments or the big wins you've been involved in.
"Our thinking is 'That one is done, it's gone, we need to focus on the next challenge,' because there is always another match or objective around the corner.
"Whether it was a historic goal or not, the main thing was for us to show how good of a team we are, what we believe we're capable of and to set a marker down in Europe to ensure every opponent has great respect for Liverpool."
