In an unexpected turn of events today, Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Premier League outfit Manchester United. The Manchester side announced the news in a club statement which reads, "Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.""We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future.""A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."Manchester United has announced that Jose Mourinho has left the Club. We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future. #MUFC— Manchester United (@ManUtd) December 18, 2018The 55-year-old has been under much scrutiny for months following a series of horrible results including his most recent game against rivals Liverpool that ended with a 3-1 defeat, leaving the Merseyside club to be 19 points ahead of the Red Devils. The result marked the side's worst start to the Premier League in 28 years and proved to be the last straw for the United administration.Despite Mourinho having signed a new two-year contract with the club earlier this year, feuds with players and open criticism of the board for not backing him with regards to transfers have finally led to the end of his relationship with the club. The Red Devils currently stand with eleven points off the top four in the Premier League table and are closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table, with the likes of Liverpool and city rivals Manchester City. The Portuguese is known for meeting his end in the third campaign with a club and the saga only continues for the former Real Madrid boss.It remains to be seen who will be in line for the job that has been difficult since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure from Old Trafford.Twitter has since exploded with reaction to the news:Jose Mourinho has been sacked following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. Poetry in motion.— Matt (@FalseFirmino) December 18, 2018How many times have you been sacked in England now Mourinho? pic.twitter.com/MkaTDJp7Pd— FootyThrowbacks (@FootyThrowbacks) December 18, 2018Mourinho sacked. He was the overwhelming fan choice in ‘16. Had a good first season, an acceptable second one until it faded badly. This season has been atrocious and 80% of fans wanted him gone in the last month - not that he’s the only one to blame. And only a week before Christmas, too – at least give him the chance to be visited by three spirits who might persuade him to change his tactics, for God’s sake.
