In an unexpected turn of events today, Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Premier League outfit Manchester United.

The Manchester side announced the news in a club statement which reads, "Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect."

"We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future."

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."

The 55-year-old has been under much scrutiny for months following a series of horrible results including his most recent game against rivals Liverpool that ended with a 3-1 defeat, leaving the Merseyside club to be 19 points ahead of the Red Devils.

The result marked the side's worst start to the Premier League in 28 years and proved to be the last straw for the United administration.

Despite Mourinho having signed a new two-year contract with the club earlier this year, feuds with players and open criticism of the board for not backing him with regards to transfers have finally led to the end of his relationship with the club.

The Red Devils currently stand with eleven points off the top four in the Premier League table and are closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table, with the likes of Liverpool and city rivals Manchester City.

The Portuguese is known for meeting his end in the third campaign with a club and the saga only continues for the former Real Madrid boss.

It remains to be seen who will be in line for the job that has been difficult since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure from Old Trafford.

Twitter has since exploded with reaction to the news:
